SCAMPER •
The bright red car rolling down the Old Road didn't seem to fit into the night. A seventeen-year-old girl sat in the front, her face tearstained. Scamper had no idea why she was crying. He was too busy spitting with anger. He had just ben sleeping. He had woken up, and this girl was in front of him. Forgetting that humans were evil, he had purred and played and been delighted. Ten he fell asleep again, and was woken by this loud machine. He had been in this type of machine many times - if he was in Master's car, it meant he was going to the vt. But he had no idea what this car meant, let alone why this girl had woken him up and why she was crying.
Fury subsiding, Scamper started gnawing at the metal bars of te cage. He was a smart cat, but he would rather be safe than sorry. What if this girl was driving him to his doom? No, thank you. I was about to die a peaceful death, he thought, but a voice at the back of his head added in, Not so peaceful. Okay, okay, he had sensed fear in the way the other animals' eyes were wide. Like they could smell something. But of course, Scamper had no sense of smell.
The girl came to a sudden stop, and Scamper gave a started hiss as he was thrown forward so that his muzzle got stuck in the wires of his cage. The girl got out, saw him, and gently pushed his muzzle in so that it was free. She picked up his cage and opened it. Scamper hung out at the back. Whenever he went to the front of that cage, he would remember all of it - those animals in that room, lying there while the the humans poked something in them. Then their eyes would slide shut, and Scamper would have a sense that they would never open again.
The girl made a sound that reminded Scamper of a mouse - he crouched down immediately out of reflex and instinct, his blue eyes wide and flicking around in case there was any prey. The girl grabbed at his front paws and picked him up. The siamese tabby settled comfortably in her arms. she started crying again, the crouched down and dropped him. He circled her, eyes narrowed. She grabbed him and kissed him. She loves me? Scamper thought. He didn't know anyone who loved him - at least not after that incident with the baby.
But after two minutes, Scamper knew she didn't, because right after that, she got back into her car and drove away, leaving a stream of exhaust behind her. Scamper coughed twice, then sat down, neatly curling his tail around him. What should he do now? I have rabies. he reminded himself. And then he had an idea. If he had rabies, he wasn't going to let himself hurt anyone. The tom tentatively stepped onto the road, then walked to the middle and sat down. He spread himself out awkwardly in the middle of the road and closed his eyes, sighing, and thinking, ah. Peaceful death at last.
