THIS PLACE BROUGHT BACK BAD MEMORIES. Only a few months ago, Bird had found himself here; half-dead and crazed with fear and sadness. Bird scented the exact scents he'd smelled on that day, the fresh flowers blooming along the roadside, the brick and dirt beneath his paws. He tried to calm himself, he needed food and he wanted to see if hunting was his thing. He made himself still and opened his mouth to scent the air, warm and honey-scented. He tasted pollen and a few birds way out of his reach, but then... more cats? He shook his head and ignored the scent, he wasn't in the mood for social business right now. He tasted the air again for prey and just as he identified the scent of mouse he heard it's scuffle. He moved close to the ground, sliding effortlessly into the hunter's crouch he'd memorized long ago.
With the wind coming from up-wind and the sun shining on his ginger pelt Bird crept closer and closer to the reasonably large mouse at the base of an oak tree. He moved carefully, setting his paws down only after he was sure he wouldn't break any twigs or rustle any leaves. One more step and he'd be within leaping distance, he tensed, ready to jump when a loud voice interrupted him. The mouse fled before Bird could rest a paw on it. "Dammit!" Bird said loudly, he was greatly aggravated by the noise. Bird was so shocked that anyone would ruin a perfect day with noise! Ugh. He trotted quickly towards the direction that the noise of a cat was coming from, he was determaned to see who this was.
The sun was high and the sky was clear and crystal cyan. The sprouts of grass peeping out from the damp earth tickled Bird's paws as he walked, he was too angry to notice the beauty of the day. He was thinking of the day he came here, the day his life went from normal to un-normally suckish.
"Bird look here, I think it's a den or some sort." Andromeda, Bird's sister beckoned him with her tail. She was squinting down a hole under some tangled roots. It was chilly out and all the kittens were hungry; thier last meal had been so long ago none of them could recall it clearly. "Don't." Bird scolded, as Andromeda paused from stepping into the mouth of the opening in the bleak, cold earth. "Why?" She asked, they all talked in short syllables, as little as possible, to save energy. "There might be something big in it, like a badger. They eat cats." He explained shuddering at the thought of a big black and white animal lumbering over to his sisters and gobbling them up. "Oh," Andromeda was at a loss for words, her mouth twisting in a grim expression. Her paws scarbbled backwards untill she stood next to Bird, he was just barely taller then her, as he should be. He had been the smallest for forever and was pleased that things were finally in the right order. "We should be going." Bird said, turning and waiting for Andromeda; she followed faithfully as all of his sisters did. They trusted Bird with thier lives and Bird took that task very seriously. The next day they'd all disapered.
Still lost in his memories, Bird was sitting by the edge of the road. All the anger in him had drained from his body, replaced by sorrow and a feeling of loss in his stomach. He had forgotten all about the failure of his hunting trip and the voice.
