There are two important aspects to SS: the continuing-the-story-one, and the not-knowing-other-Clans one.
continuing the story:
The plot of SS starts out in Power of Three: The Sight, at about the time when Jaypaw becomes a medicine cat apprentice. It continues from there -- not with the plot of the books, but with a plot that you, the RPer, makes up.
not knowing other Clans:
The first thing you should do when you join SS (assuming you've already read the rules and stuff) is to choose a Clan. You will only be allowed to create characters in that Clan, and you will only be able to see that Clan's boards. The only way you'll be able to find out information about other Clans is through Gatherings (and through spying, if the leader chooses to).
