History: Fern was only a month old when she was adopted by a family as a present to a kind, slouched old lady. She was put into a small, yellow decorated box. She was fairly frightened with the whole situation so she stayed still. Little did she know, she was a birthday gift for an old lady hitting eighty-four. Fern stayed stil in her box, but definently not quiet. She "mewed" over and over and when she did this the box was shaken violently by a young boy with orange hair. "Mom this dumb animal won't be quiet!" The boy would whine. "Just hold her a little longer! Your grandma will be opening her presents soon" The mother would say, her fingers constantly clicking away on her tiny phone.
They sang their happy birthday songs and she heard the little old lady giggle. The box finally started to move and it halted abruptly. Fern's eyes squeezed shut, awaiting what was to come. What will they do to me? Will they throw me away!?! Fern started to panic and was getting very restless when the box lid finally opened. Fern was blinded for a split second, then everything came into focus. A sweet smiling old lady held her by the scruff. Fern looked around only to see party favors, and scary looking guests. She also noticed the round boy with orange hair glaring at her."I absolutely love her! How adorable! My beautiful baby...." The old lady would say with a quiver of excitement in her. She hugged Fern tight and Fern enjoyed every bit of it. "It was going to be a great life" Fern thought and she purred loudly at the lady's neck.
Life was well and Fern enjoyed every minute. "Come here my darling" the old lady would say with a bowl of warm milk. Fern loved this old lady she knew as "Rosie". At night Fern would jump onto the bed and wait for Rosie to arrive from her evening shower. Then after Rosie would take her medication she would lay next Fern and Fern would curl up around Rosie's head and fall asleep. It was a beautiful friendship.
Every once in awhile Rosie's family (the "Evil ones" Fern called them) came to visit and Fern would sit quietly on Rosie's lap, afraid the boy would do something to hurt her. Rosie would pet her and call Fern her "baby." The woman known as "mom" to the round boy, would stare at Fern viguressly. "You treat that cat better then you treated us, ma!"The lady would say. "Rosie treats me better then her own kits? Wow she must really love me" Fern would think and then pur with contentment. "You weren't so adorable..." Rosie would say and giggle back to "mom." Life was absolutley sweet.....until all Fern's dreams came to an sudden end.
One night after Rosie took her medication she laid down next to Fern as always. Fern suddenly became restless, but Rosie patted her and told her to calm down. Being that Fern loved Rosie so much she did as Rosie said and slowly fell back asleep. In the morning Fern was starlted awake by sounds of men in the house. They brought in a bed and hoisted Rosie onto it. Fern was panic stricken. She rose from her slumber quickley enough to latch onto one of the men. "Where are they taking Rosie!?! I have to help her!" Fern screamed in her head, but she was a cat and she wouldn't understand that these people were helping Rosie. "Get this thing off me!" One man yelled, and another mangently tugged on Fern to get her off. He held her close and whispered to her, trying to calm her. "It's ok little cat. Your friend is going to be ok. We're going to take care of her and bring her right back." The man seemed sincere and it seemed like she could trust him so Fern calmed down. The man handed her to "mom" who was standing in the kitchen shaking. "don't worry ma'am. We'll take her immidiatly to the hospital. We're going to need you to come along." The man said, and just like that "mom" dropped Fern and headed out the door followed by the round bot, and the skinny man. Fern was left alone..........
Fern waited and waited, but Rosie never came back. She sat in Rosie's bed not moving, just waiting. The man had lied to her....she had trusted him and he LIED! About three days later hunger pangs finally got Fern up from her crater in the pillow to scavange for food. In the middle ofher search "Mom barged into the house. "CAT WHERE ARE YOU!!" 'Mom' yelled persistently and when she finally saw Fern she swooped her up off the ground and rattled her. "HOW COULD THAT WOMAN LOVE YOU MORE! YOU KNOW WHAT SHE DID! She put YOU in her will! She gave YOU everything!" Fern was very frightened and started to hiss in response. "You know what I have an Idea!" As swiftly as she camein 'mom' picked up a random cardboard box and stuffed Fern in. Fern mewed and hissed but there was no response except a car door slammiing behind.
To her dissappointment she heard the round boy speak "mom what are we going to do with her?" 'Mom didn't answer, instead she drove. Fern could tell the speed because the air whooshed in drying her already dry mouth. It was getting dark and fern had to strain her eyes to see outside the small holes in the box. It was dark on an endless road. The car stopped suddenly and the doors flew open. Fern tripped over her feet when the box was pulled out of the car. The wet air pushed its way into the box. "Bye kitty!" 'mom' threw the box over the side of the road into a pond. Fern smacked into the side of the box not knowing what to do. Her heart pounded in her chest. The water seaped in and the car lights in the distance disappeared down the road.
Panic shot through Fern and she finally got the lid open and she jumped out of the box into the cold black water. With a splash fern manuvered her way to shore--or atleast she hoped. After what seemed like forever she made it and she was tired out. She laid there until morning contemplating what just happened. She laid in shock......whats going to happen to me?
Hunger again set in, waking her up to a new day....a day she wanted to hide from forever. She lifted herself up and stumbled for the road. There was no cars hardly any trees.....a road. She smelled the scents of other cats but could not see them, so she pressed on. Very wearily into her new life.
Personality: Fern has learned to stay clear of humans. She feels she was betrayed and wishes to stay as far away from humans as possible. She is very inexperienced and worries a lot about her future. Along with the uncertainty of the future she is very determined and headstrong. She does not give up easily if she knows she has the upper hand. She's pretty cautious around other cats, not sure whether they will attack or not. She wants to make friends but finds it hard. She feels she doesn't fit in with the feral cats and shes an outcast among the house pets. Shes also very indescive, so pretty much shes a worrywort.....maybe she should have been named "Fern WORRYWORT." She does have hope that she'll fit in with the other feral cats someday.
Because Fern had to grow up faster then expected she lost track of having fun, thats why she can relate to kittens. She has a soft spot for the innocent and wishes to keep them out of harms way. She has a motherly spirit at such a young age. When angry she fights very aggresivly, imaginning the opposing side as 'mom' the human she hated. Her atttacks might seem rookyish but her speed is unmached. She feels intimidated by toms but won't show it. She walks proud among them but deep inside shes frighten. She feels Toms can take her down fast and show no mercy, but thats her lack of self confidence that speaks. She feels she has a higher calling and will search for it. Whether it be to live peacefully in the forest or fight side-by-side with fellow cats, she'll do it!
She can become excited very easily and loves to play, but life gets in the way and happiness is replaced by fear of the unknown. She wants to live life, and go with the flow but past experience tells her not to get to comfortable and not to get too attached to anyone. She tries to give up her troublesome mentality but it always seems to come back and bite her in the butt.
Her fears lie within the fact that she might not be able to find comrads among the group of forest cats. Their skills tend to frighten her and she strives on becoming just like the feral cats. Not needing to depend on humans to feed them, to love them, to care for them, to nuture them back to help,........to abandon them. She feels like she just might like the feral cats. They could give her something that humans could not....family.
