Licking her kits Violet stared into the forest. Where was Rowan? She needed him. He had left to go hunting in the morning, but he wasn't back. Had he left her? No. It felt like her heart had been stolen, he couldn't just leave her? Could he?
No! He was just out hunting and got caught up in something. But what? A dark wave plummeted over her head. Dapple? What if he had seen Dapple? The mewling of her kits brought her back to earth. They needed her, she needed to be strong for them. But they needed a father. No, they needed Rowan.
Licking her three kits to keep them warm. Violet stared out into the forest, he was probably just caught up in something, anything. Or maybe he got lost, it was a confusing place. To stop herself from worrying, she decided to think of names. The orange tabby with white splotches could be Cinnamon, just like her pelt was.The silver torbie could be...Pistachio. His eyes were green, just like the inside of one. Violet looked at the last kit. She was small and beautiful. And she looked just like Violet, her name could be... Pecan.

Rowan trotted through the woods, a squirrel and a sparrow held firmly in his jaws. He'd been hunting for Violet for the last little bit - she needed her strength, being so close to her kitting now. He felt a burst of pride as he imagined the kittens. Some would look like Violet and some like him but they be equally adorable. He grinned, sniffing the air for Violet's scent. It was hard with prey clamped in his jaws to notice anything else but he was pretty sure he remembered the way back to the little clearing where Violet had been taking a nap.
As he got closer he thought he could detect other noises. Sounds that didn't sound at all like Violet. Squeaking... Rowan dashed forward with surprise as it hit him, his eyes widening at the sight of his mate and kits. Kits! "Viuwheea!" he yowled through the prey, then dropped it on the ground and darted to her side, licking her furiously all over. "Violet!" The yowl was actually understandable this time and he grinned. There were three of them. Three lovely, beautiful little kits.
"Violet," he murmured softly, his voice muffled with a mix of emotion and awe. These were their kits - theirs! He bent over them, licking each of their little heads in turn. They were adorable - each and every one of them. "Have you thought of names?" he asked suddenly. He licked Violet's head reassuringly. "Of course, it's still early," he mewed, smiling at his mate. Suddenly he remembered the prey and whirled around to fetch the squirrel and sparrow. He deposited them by Violet's head and nudged her fondly. "Go on," he urged. "Eat. You need your strength." He lay beside her, his body curving around so the kits ay protected between them. "I love you, Violet," he said softly, purring.

Violet looked up as Rowan emerged through the forest. He dropped his prey at her feet and started licking her. "Oh Rowan, There amazing little kits. " She looked into his deep eyes, she could see the happiness in them. Violet listened to Rowan as he began to talk. "Yes, I was thinking...Cinnamon for that one. And, that one could be pistachio because of his green eyes, the other one could be pecan. What do you think?" Violet loved those names, something about them were just perfect. No everthing was just perfect, she hoped that Rowan would agree. Violet looked at the three kits. "I better get some rest" she lay her head down on her paws and fell asleep.

Rowan nuzzled Violet's cheek fondly, feeling as if he was about to burst with happiness. He loved her so much and now... kittens! And he knew instinctively that he loved all of them too. His heart seemed to have grown - it must have to be able to include all this love he felt for them. His family. He felt an unexpected stir of delight at that word. He was a father now. He had a family again. He purred, a soft rumbling sound, licking Violet's ear softly. He smiled as he listened to her talking about names for them, giving a nod and a smile at each one.
"Pistachio," he murmured with a grin, licking the little newborn tom. "It's cute," he assured her with a grin. "I like it." He moved on to the next kitten. "And Pecan, right?" He licked the little she-cat that shared his markings. A little him. And beside her, a little Violet. It all felt so real now. They had made these kittens. Their kittens. "And what did you say for this one?" licking the other one. He realized upon closer inspection that she wasn't exactly like Violet after all. Mostly orange with white splotches - the opposite. And the orange fur was stripe with darker orange, tabby markings. "Cinnamon," he repeated softly. Pistachio, Pecan and Cinnamon.
He gave a small grin. "Minny?" he meowed, suggesting a nick name for the little one. He loved the name Cinnamon but Minny would be cute as something shorter amongst the family. He grinned, fascinated as he watched the little kittens. "Pistachio's markings are quite something," he murmured with a grin. "Patches of silver and orange tabby fur... like tortoiseshell markings." His heart thudded so loudly he could have sworn the world would hear but there was no reaction. Tortoiseshell.
Like Dapple.
No, he wasn't thinking about her now. How could he?! This was about the kittens - about him and Violet and their lovely kittens. He wasn't going to think about her. Rowan felt a pang of sadness. So it had come to this? Thinking about Dapple was something bad? Something he wasn't supposed to do? They had been friends too, he reminded himself. But he still hadn't found her. He needed too. He needed to tell her that they weren't going to live together. He had a mate now. A family. A small smile broke onto his face at this reminder and he nuzzled his mate fondly, curling around the little kittens. His daughters and his son. He'd grown up so fast.
