It was a warm night in Nenbrook, and Soul had crawled his way up to the top of a huge, looming red barn in search of somewhere to sleep safely. Beat trees- there was always a twig someplace there shouldn't be whenever he tried to sleep in those.
The orange tabby tom was lying on his back with one paw lying across his chest and the other lying by his side on the peeling red paint, and soft snores were accompanied by the occasional murmured word.
"Wake up..." He'd said softly, oblivious to the irony of the sleep talk he was speaking out in.
"Stay awake... speak to me..." Soul's expression changed from serene to unhappy within moments, and he went so far as to stir restlessly. The paw on his chest flopped onto the ground as he turned over, ears lying down against his head.
"Hey... breathe... c'mon, c'mon, say something...!"
His breath hitched, and soon the orange cat began to move again, this time reaching out towards the sky with a limp paw and prodding the air.
His whimpering swiftly turned more desperate.
"Stop pretending to be asleep, you... holding your breath...? Why're you doing that?"
Silence reigned over the barn as Soul suddenly went rigid, and then a few seconds later he murmured so quietly it was barely audible,
"Why are you doing this to me?"
And then with a sudden gasp, amber eyes flew open and Soul was breathing hard, struggled to sit himself up and identify his surroundings. Another nightmare, same as the night before that, and the night before that. Bringing a paw up to his head, he rubbed his face tiredly, and realized that he was shaking. No, he couldn't have been asleep for longer than ten minutes...
The darkness all around him was all the answer he needed. It had to have been at least a couple hours since Soul had pulled himself onto the red rooftop, and now, he found that he regretted the decision to come up here, since he was feeling really, really alone.
Pulling himself into a sitting position, the tom began to wash his face, ruffling up the orange fur and letting it be swept up by the faint breeze passing through. With another deep breath, he began to calm himself down.
"Wh..." Turning towards the starry sky above him, he let out a shaky, almost disbelieving laugh. "What the hell...?"
